My Apprentice Finale Thoughts

Posted on Tue, Apr 24, 2007, at 09:36 AM

I want to start by thanking all of my supporters and fans of "The Apprentice" and most importantly, the users of Zoodango. It's been a wonderful experience over the past 14 weeks. Last night was the final episode of "The Apprentice," and in a way, I'm very happy that everything's come to a close. The live finale was fun and entertaining, and it was great to see all my fellow candidates whom I haven’t seen since the taping 9 months ago.

For those of you who didn’t see the finale or follow the season, I’ll make the long story short. “The Apprentice” is a reality television show about Type-A business personalities competing on business related projects week in and week out. Each week, there is a winning team and a losing team, and Donald Trump fires a person from the losing team. The goal is to win projects, not get fired, and display as much leadership as possible.

This season, the final four consisted of me, Frank, Nicole, and Stefani. All the candidates displayed great moments during the show, and they all deserved to be at the final table. Going into the finale, I thought I had a fair shot at winning the reality tv competition. After all, I was the only finalist with both an overall winning record (7-5) and winning project management record (2-1). I stepped up 3 times as project manager, which was more than all the final four combined. Frank and Nicole both had an overall losing record of 5-7 and losing project manager record of 0-1. Stefani had the same overall winning record of 7-5 as me, but she never took on the role as project manager. In addition, there were 3 sets of executives from the sponsoring companies that specifically mentioned my strong leadership.

As I thought about my odds of winning, I was sure that Donald Trump would be the type of executive that would look at the bottom line when awarding the victor of the show. I was also sure that Donald Trump would only award the crown to someone who took risk and displayed leadership since he always preached “taking risk” and “stepping up”. I also took into consideration the precedence of how he has made previous decisions. In every season of “The Apprentice”, the previous winners have had a winning project management record……five seasons in a row. So when you look at the data, you can understand I wasn’t being overconfident……I was just looking at my odds based on the objective data.

Some of my contacts warned me that Donald Trump may not make his decisions on objective facts, but I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. The media portrays him as an erratic and emotional character, but I found him to be a quite sensible and rational business executive. At the same time, I understood that “The Apprentice” was a television game show first with a business concept second. As a fellow CEO (obviously Zoodango is not as big as Trump International), I wanted to believe that Donald Trump would look at the overall facts, essentially the annual report, and make his decision. So based on the facts, my chances looked pretty good…….believe it or not, you could have placed a bet on me in Vegas…..the Vegas odds-makers gave me the best odds at winning the competition. On the NBC website, the viewer polls had me leading up until 15 minutes of the finale. So the question then lies, what happened?

In all of my press interviews this morning, they asked me why Donald Trump didn't hire me. They all asked me about what Donald Trump meant by saying "I didn't like some of the dialogue……you know what I mean." I've received over 300 emails about this confusion as well. People are asking me if I had a disagreement with Donald Trump or if I said something wrong during the commercial breaks. People are asking me if Donald Trump was displeased with something I said during the season.

Well, let’s analyze this a bit further. First, his second statement about “you know what I mean” signifies that the dialogue must have been a 2-way communication between him and I or a reference to a conversation about something I may have said. It also signifies that the dialogue must have been offensive enough to warrant an expectation that both parties would recall this so called dialogue. So, I went through my 150 pages of journaling. I kept a journal every single day during the taping of the show. As I read through the journal, there were only two negative comments to me by Donald Trump. In the Smart Mouth task, he told me that I did a bad job, but that I was a good leader in previous tasks. Another reference was on the Las Vegas Towers task, he told me that he didn’t like one of the stock photos that we chose on the brochure and he didn’t like the color of the gold shade on the Trump Towers. These were the only references to direct negative statement from Donald Trump to me during the entire season. On the other hand, I can give you at least 23 references when he gave me praise. Even during the GNC boardroom, when Bill Rancic accused me of covering my butt, Donald Trump stood up for me and said, “James did nothing wrong…..in fact, maybe Surya should have listened to him.” Even when I took negative heat in the boardroom, Donald Trump stood up for me and did not fire me.

So, this throws out the theory that this mysterious dialogue occurred during the actual taping of the season (task or boardroom). Next, we have to look at the negative statements that I may have said during my personal interviews. I did say some negative things about some of my competitors in my personal interviews. But the reality is that everyone made these kinds of statements. The producers ask you all kinds of “funny” questions that lead you into saying something comical or sarcastic about your competitors……the purpose of this is to make entertaining television. Remember, this is a reality television show. So, then you have to ask yourself….did everyone say negative things or was it just me. So, I went back to the tapes of everyone on the final four, and what I found interesting was that all of us said negative things about others. So, this throws out the assumption that this mysterious dialogue happened during our personal interviews. It also doesn’t make sense that this dialogue would have originated from the personal interviews because Donald Trump never spoke with me about any of these interviews. So, there’s really no way for his comment about “you know what I mean” to make sense.

Through the process of elimination, we can conclude that the “mysterious dialogue” did not happen during actual projects, boardroom, or personal interviews. So this leaves us with the live finale. Did I say something during the live finale or during commercial time that could have offended Donald Trump? First, I will tell you that I said absolutely nothing to Donald Trump during the commercials. He said a few words to us, but he was busy getting ready for the next take. As of right now, I don’t know what the heck Donald Trump was referring to with this “mysterious dialogue.” He looked at me and said “you know what I mean” which confused me even more. I was completely dumbfounded.

However, I can speculate one thing. During the finale, I did mention in my personal tape that I quit a six-figure job to start my own company and focused on my conviction of why I wanted to be my own boss. I also mentioned how much I enjoy my time with family. Next, I committed the big “slap on the hand” by answering Don Jr.’s question that I am the current founder and CEO of Zoodango.com. In the real world, this statement would be 100% okay. But on television, especially on Donald Trump’s show where companies pay millions of dollars for product endorsements…..any reference to a company is treated as an endorsement for promoting the company. To be 100% honest with you, I did not intentionally bring up the name Zoodango.com…..it just happened. Zoodango.com is literally a part of who I am now. I eat, sleep, drink, and wake up to Zoodango.com. It’s just part of my every day speech. In retrospect, many people would probably have advised me to use the live audience of 8 million viewers to promote my company, but I wasn’t thinking this way. If this were indeed my pure intention, I would have given the whole CEO elevator pitch. When Don Jr. asked me the strategic thinking or big picture question, I gave him an example by pointing to Zoodango.com. After seeing that I love being an entrepreneur, and I love hanging with my wife and kids, and I love Zoodango……maybe Trump didn’t see how I had any more room to love him. After all, he did tell Nicole that he wanted to be loved more than Tim. Well, I can only speculate, but I have no choice but to speculate since I wasn’t given a clear and compelling answer from Mr. Trump.

Now I know the following question will be asked. If I could do the whole finale all over again, would I have created the same video footage of my family, the speech about being an entrepreneur, and promoting Zoodango.com. Here’s my answer. YES! I have no choice. Here’s what I mean by saying that I have no choice. I am who I am. I am a proud family man. I love being an entrepreneur. And I love Zoodango.com. During the finale, I made a subconscious decision to choose my life today over the life that Trump’s new job could offer. Not that Trump’s deal isn’t great…….it’s a phenomenal opportunity to work with Donald Trump making $250K. It just wasn't for me this time around.

Like I said, I don’t take credit for this decision at all……..it was my subconscious choice. Our subconscious makes all kinds of decisions…..we just have to recognize when it happens. It’s very self-revealing and empowering because it tells you what’s important in your life. Did I have to go on “The Apprentice” and make it to the finale to realize my subconscious priorities? No……but in this case, it all worked out.

I’ll tell you the simplest reason why I went on this show. I thought it would be fun/adventurous and a great opportunity to learn from a billionairre. . I love adventure. I’ve got a philosophy that I live by: “My philosophy is to live a life of short street corners. Every turn could yield a new surprise. It could be good, bad, or great but at least it keeps us excited and on our toes. Life is no fun on a long, straight highway knowing exactly where we're going to end up." This is why I went on the show. In my adventure, I also found competition. I am a very, very competitive person. Ask my buddies who have played basketball with me. In my pursuit on “The Apprentice,” I got closer and closer to winning…….and finally, I just wanted to win so bad especially for the sake of competing. I’m not saying that this is a bad thing. Some people say that your motive should be 100% to work for Donald Trump forever. Well, this is crazy. Why would you have to go through a reality television show to work for Donald Trump. Send in a resume and application the conventional way. He’s got great people who will call and interview you. People go on “The Apprentice” for all kinds of reasons…..but mine happened to be to gain some Trump insight and create adventure with a cause. I’m sure you now understand the adventure part. Now, here’s the “cause” part. The cause part was to show my two little girls that they could achieve anything in life. If daddy - a minority Asian American – can get on prime time television, then they can certainly do anything in this world. I hope and pray that my two girls will have no boundaries or glass ceilings in their pursuit of their dreams. I was so proud to see them on television during the finale. That moment was certainly the best moment during my whole stint on “The Apprentice”…..yes, even better than rapping with Snoop Dogg.

All in all, this was a great experience. I still wish I had won because I’m just a competitive guy, but I believe Stefani has the right industry background. I won’t concede that she outperformed me from a game perspective because I did have the numbers in my favor and I did show more leadership and creativity, but I believe Stefani has a great legal and real estate background….perfect for Trump’s world and she's a great person! I live in a world of the Web 2.0 and social networking and the internet……not quite the world of Donald Trump. I only wish I could have gotten a more clear and definitive reason why I lost this game, but that’s the game of life…..some things are meant to be in the grey.

Thanks all for reading this insanely long post. Signing off…..thanks for the season! Oh by the way, did the Zoodango.com comment actually help……….well, let me put it this way, our servers went down with an overnight increase of 900% in our traffic. Don't worry, our servers are back up and ready. We just didn't see this coming.

Well, that just adds more mystery to why you weren't hired - the final decision apparently had nothing to do with the episodes preceding it...that sucks - it's okay though, when Zoodango becomes bigger than the tallest Trump tower, it'll all be right in the end ;)

James you grew on me as the Apprentice went on--however there was an earlier episode that I was wanting you to be gone--and going back through the lessons noted--not sure where that was. Perhaps Donald may have been referencing when you and another were trying to overcome the team leader--this was a game--but would that be appropriate in the real world. Stefani seemed more direct and confident many times in what the viewers saw. Because of the rules this time--keeping a PM till a loss --this prevented some people from having an opportunity to be a PM--but there is backend leadership as well and Stefani really looked very strong on that ---in the commercial taping for your joint project especially--she kept you on task and to the time. She came out in a way that I thought no one else on the show did in that segment.. Your analysis of Donald was very complete but did not fully take in the effects of this new rule about the PM. Staeani's personal video played during the show overcame any viewpoint of her weaknesses. Your video was cute and strong in many respects --would not have suggested the shot with your hands in your pockets for a video like this---except for demonstrating integral teamwork.--and that was one of your perceived weaknesses. She also seemed a bit more poised and stronger and original in the final show. Many of the results of a lot of things are just life and circumstances. I did appreciate your mention of the subconscious mind--interesting point. I liked your creative drive and thought your focus improved over the course of the show. Your voice and presentations imrpoved as well as early on you annoyed me--but then grew on me and that is always a big plus when you can turn someone around.

James. I've been meaning to look up your site for a while now but I haven't quite got the URL until now. And it now hits me that I could have Googled you, duh. But now I finally have through NBC/Aprrentice webpage.

As for the Aprrentice show there were two I was rooting for, you and Franky. Arron was on my good list too but it seemed he slacked off during sales with the honey. You do show a lot of creativity and ENTHUSIASM to every project I've seen you do. That's something I need more of and I'll make that a goal for me this year of 2007 to push myself further.

AHHH I LOVE YOU MAN!

Hi James, thanks for the long post. It was a great read. I enjoyed watching you on the Apprentice - you were a great leader and motivator. I was rooting for you to win this. Perhaps Donald knew that you were too passionate about zoodango.com that didn't quite gel with what he wanted - perhaps 100% loyalty. It's interesting that you brought up the subconcious - perhaps Stefanie somewhat displayed more "hunger" to be the apprentice. Whatever it is, CONGRATULATIONS! You are a winner in a lot of people's eyes and I too believe that you are going to do extremely well. Take care and God bless.

Alexander Blom on Tue, Apr 24, 2007, 05:38 PM

Thanks for clearing that up (I first found this post on your other blog).

Also, props for mentioning this site on the finale - its how I found out about it :)

Hi James, I enjoyed watching "the apprentice" of this season and really believed that you'd win! You didn't win this season.. but cheer up! After reading many comments (here and from your another personal blog), I've realized that I belong to the majority of people who rooted for you and thought you'd win. Have you noticed that "the majority of people" consists of not only huge fans in America but also fans around world?

Well, I like Stefanie 'cause she's so cool... but you DESERVED to win!

Put the apprentice aside, I hope you and zoodango.com go global with your big dream! I joined zoodango just show you my support.

God bless you, your company, and your family - your daughters are so cute!

That was an awesome blog - I'm so glad you took the time to write that! I've been spending the last few days focusing on The Apprentice for my website & trying to get to the bottom of what happened. It's nice to hear your side of the story. I love your integrity, I wish you all the success in the world!

Jenny Choi on Tue, Apr 24, 2007, 10:47 PM

James, I can't tell you how incredible of a journey it has been to watch you demonstrate great leadership and stick to your ethics/morals throughout the entire process. Not once did I feel that you compromised your character, and all the things you taught and advised our ANCC college group last year were either employed or shown in some shape or form through your actions and words on "The Apprentice." I am so happy for all your accomplishments, and I think you should know that you'll always be a winner in the eyes of your ANCC community. You deserve everything that's best. God Bless James!

Scott McNiel on Tue, Apr 24, 2007, 11:05 PM

Great Job James! This was the first and probably only season of the Apprentice that i will watch and I must say you made it extremely appealing. I'm glad your servers went down over night... that is good problem to have in a weird way. If I knew back in our basketball league I was playing an apprentice star I would have beat your b-ball team by even more, but we'll save that for next season. Be blessed my brother! All glory and honor and praise to our Lord!

You do us Asians proud! I hope you realize you were the real WINNER of the show, don't you? I didn't think any one else on the show came close to you or Stefani. I do, however, must say that Stefani would probably be a better fit for the 'Trump World' or should I say 'Universe of Trump' since the universe revolves around him, or at least, that's what he truly believes. From the potential you have displayed throughout the course of the show, I see you more as an 'equal' to Trump, rather than working 'under' him as a his running dog lacky, as what appears Bill Rancic has become. I also believe that he went into the finale, knowing you were the one, however, after viewing the video and seeing that you have a beautiful, loving family who completes you and that you are so established already, he knew you had a 'life' outside of Trumpville and that would probably be offensive to an egomaniac who displays all the obvious symptoms of LMS (Little Man Syndrome), i.e. knockout wife, 'BIG' towers, gawdy over-the-top use of brass/gold, attacking Rosie and ESPECIALLY the over-the-top CHEESY finale!!! Is this guy still stuck in the 90's??? I kid you not, we will look back at this finale in 10 years, laugh our asses off and compare it to how well feel today towards 'bad' 80's martial arts movie with caucasian protagonist! His reverse psychology marketing strategy works to make us think "BIG" synonymously with "TRUMP", but to me, this is quite the contrary. I apologize, James, for going off on a rant like this on your blog but I just felt so 'cheated' and ripped off when he slapped us all in the face when he didn't choose you, then kicked us while we were down when he didn't provide us with a reasonable explaination! Nonetheless, Mazeltov on coming out the real WINNER and I wish you continued success with Zoodango. Vancouver, Canada loves you!!

I was so thrilled to find out that you were a Korean! You are a total inspiration to Korean immigrants across the continent. Dae-han-min-gook *clap clap clap clap clap*

Jeff Collins on Wed, Apr 25, 2007, 11:45 AM

James,

You did a phenomenal job this season and were a clear winner (in my book). I would have wanted to run the race exactly same way you did: get in there, work hard, prove myself to be the best and then go home to my family. I probably would have unknowingly plugged my company as well ; - )
In a selfish way, I'm glad you are still with us in Seattle and continuing to pioneer zoodango's path in addition to whatever comes next. I believe the rest of the USA and the world is starting to realize Washington is not just filled with big thinkers but really BIG thinkers (don't make me bring out my list). And we're not trying to put anyone down either. On the contrary we want to bring everyone with us. We want the competition; we thrive on it.
Many of your bloggers have stated the Asian community is proud of you. I would like to add entrepreneurs and the Northwest to that list. In the end you stood true to form & true to yourself. You are a risk-taker, an entrepreneur, a big thinker and most importantly a godly man and a family man.

Here are a couple of my Trump Blogs:

and I had an even better one set for

Hi James, I agree with all the comments before. Just like them, I was confused and upset with the result. I asked my all roommates to watch the show, just to show them how great is the Asian-American guy from our place, Seattle ;-)
Yes you are more than just a person who can work under Mr. Trump, but you are equal to him!
I do like both of you, you and Stefani, and I also agree with all the comments from people about Stefani. She's great but she's not as strong as you.
Anyway, you really did a great, excellent job. And I'd like to learn more from you.
You are truly a man with great personality, and great heart. God bless you, your family and your business James!

Antonia on Fri, Apr 27, 2007, 10:25 AM

Agree that you're the clear winner even though you weren't hired by Trump. After all, true entrepreneurs don't need people like Trump. It's the experience that counts.

James, Thank-you for the gift of sharing your thoughts on your adventure. The "final thoughts" are wonderful, articulate and provide considerable insight for all that you did during the course of the show and the integrity behind all that you do. You are the winner in this as you experienced the adventure and competition that very few others around the world were able to participate in. Congratulations on the tremendous success of being one of the final two and allowing us to be winners also. Your message is clear and the cause concrete: each of us can achieve any dream in life we choose to pursue. Thank-You.

Jung Suh on Sun, Apr 29, 2007, 12:48 AM

James, Congratulations for doing a wonderful job on the The Apprentice. I was never into that show until this season when I heard you were one of the candidates. I was hoping you win but maybe God has better plans for you. Plus being back with zoodango.com will allow you to be close to your family, which are the most important people in your life. I agree with the things you said in the blog, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. It is so great to see Korean on primetime show. You have inspired me and others in many ways. Take care James and I hope you got that email I sent you awhile back.

Anne Perez-Cromwell on Tue, May 15, 2007, 09:50 AM

James... First, CONGRATS (overdue, sorry). Second, I agree with all the others who say you are truly the winner here. Although Stefani was definitely a worthy opponent and stellar in her own way, I think you demonstrated the type of true leadership that many people in the world hunger for. If you think about it a different way, perhaps Trump's decision was truly in consideration of your tremendous abilities beyond how much money and success you can give to his organization. Perhpas Trump truly does admire, acknowledge, and respect that you are more valuable to the rest of the world than to be his work horse. Sure, the honor in working for him is great, but truly - all apprentices will be forgotten when the glory fades. In the end, I think your commitment to your life's philosophy, your work ethic, your passion, your family is the most valuable legacy that you will leave behind. Your children, their children, and future generations will be forever impacted by this adventure, this success - and they will do good things in your name. You are truly an inspiration to many because of who you are. You defy the notion that success is just about making money or the status of working for Trump. You certainly have nothing to hang your head over - because you leave behind a legacy that is far more valuable than $250k a year... Proud of you brother! I can't wait to see the things you will bring to the future!

J.B. Peterson on Wed, Jun 13, 2007, 03:53 PM

James...congratulations on your success with Zoodango. If you hadn't mentioned Zoodango on the show I never would have heard of it...thanks! I also agree that Mr. Trump saw more in you and your ability to create success for yourself that he felt you would be better off on your own. As it stands Stefani is a good mold for Mr. Trump's enterprises. Any time spent with Mr. Trump is time well spent. I know what its like to have Mr. Trump on my side because he has endorsed my company and knows that our success is his success.

I believe your real passion is to be your own boss, so, who cares you don't get the chance to work for other people, right? But to be honest, the reason I find this site is because I heard about it in your profile duirng the show, so, i guess, your particpation on popular tv show does help you some way or the other to grow this site. To be a sucessful person in this world, I think putting your lovers and kids into the prority is always a right decision. Finally, life is like a journey, I think owning a company ---zoondango would be much more fun than staying in other's company. Anyway, Hope your family happiness and hope your company run well, I'm really happy to know you, surfing your website is the most interesting thing to do, share the idea and share your life, Let's integrate your life into your life.~~
