Clothing Makes The Man, But Only If It Fits

No matter the cost of a suit, sport coat or slacks, if they do not fit properly youre not going to look or feel good in it. Here are some tips on proper fit:

- Make sure your coat feels comfortable. The ease with which you put the garment on should be your first indication of how it is going to fit.

- The coat should lie smoothly across your shoulders with the collar following the contour of your neckline. The collar should not stand away from your body.

- After buttoning the top button, look for the front of the coat to close evenly across from the lapels down the front of your body. If the coat is vented it should not pull open in the back.

- The length of your coat should be long enough to cover your entire seat. There is no need to judge the length of a coat by cupping your fingers under the coat bottom.

- Your coat sleeves should end at the break of the wrist. With a proper fitting shirt the cuffs will then show when you lift your arm to shake hands. If you want to show shirt cuffs while standing with your arms at your sides shorten the sleeves by to inch. This is a matter of personal preference.

- The waist of your trousers should rest on or just above your hips. It should fit comfortably snug against your body without feeling tight. Remember, most suits have a six-inch drop from coat chest size to pant waist size. (i.e. 42R Coat comes with 36R waist pant) Use good judgment when being told a pant can be altered to fit. The standard is no more than a two inch reduction. A tailor can rarely take three inches or more out of a pant waist without compromising the integrity of the garment.

- Pant length is important. For the traditional look, the bottom may have a slight brake in it. European styles tend to be longer, with the bottom fuller across the shoe. Pleated pants normally have cuffs and flat front pants are worn without cuffs.
